Project SOUP (Support Oxford’s Upcoming Projects) brings together the people behind new community project ideas and the people that want to help make them happen. Together we enable people to support local projects in an effective way via a simple, democratic vote over a delicious dinner, made from surplus food.
Since its inception in 2013, Project SOUP has been committed to combat local issues and be a driving force for change in the Oxford community. In particular, we strive to raise awareness about the growing epidemic of food waste and contrast it against the chronic issue of food poverty and homelessness that fill our streets. That’s why all the warming soup we serve at our events are made from surplus ingredients, as donated by the Oxford Food Bank.
We hold one soup-filling, heart-warming event per Oxford academic term. At each event, 3-4 local social action groups/charities are invited to speak about their work, ‘pitch’ an idea to try and persuade you for your vote. After all the votes have been counted, a winner is announced and all the money on the door and extra donations goes directly to them.
Our Project is a real win-win-win situation:
- a win for reducing food waste and raising awareness about the issue
- a win for the charity who receives all the donations given on the evening and the other participating charities who get more reach
- a win for the audience – participating, democratically, in driving forward change; hearing about the local charitable work in the area and making links with these organisations – this raises awareness about volunteering opportunities in the future
