Tandem Festival celebrates culture, fosters cooperation and inspires change, and they’re back for our 4th edition! This summer the Tandem experience comes to life from 22nd – 24th June. Cycle powered, volunteer-run and community led, Tandem brings you different worlds of music, art, talks, workshops, film, dance and food. Tandem Festival shows that what’s good for your ears, eyes and dancing shoes can be good for the planet too. The festival will again be hosted at Lower Farm Oxford, a stunning countryside site which features an outdoor main stage, woodland stage, truck stage and a number of indoor stages inside resonant farm barns, plus food court, workshops and craft spaces, wellbeing area, camping and numerous art installations.
The team behind the festival are looking for volunteers, and there are several ways to get involved. Especially exciting: there are still spaces for volunteers at the festival itself! (Free ticket, with a deposit scheme).
Eco-friendliness and inclusivity are at the heart of Tandem festival. They incentivise low-carbon transport to the festival (get on your bike!), avoid non-recyclable waste, upcycle everything we can and only serve veggie/vegan ethically and locally sourced food. The site is step-free and family-friendly with unisex and accessible toilets.
Tandem’s line up will once again be an exciting mix of music from all over the world. From funk to folk, and klezma to classical! As well as music, the festival will be packed with art, poetry, dance, singing and a new kids creative area! Workshops include improv comedy, circus skills, didgeridoo and stargazing, with loads of meditation, yoga AND disco yoga taking place in the Wellbeing Area. Not to forget the talks on all sorts of subjects including citizenship, water security, activism and Bitcoin!
This year’s headliners include Tantz, the foot stomping, Leeds based Balkan/klezmer group. As BBC Radio Leeds Introducing presenter Alan Raw puts it ‘prepare to dance till it nearly does you in…’ Bamako Overground are a full-on grooving West African inspired trio mixing rhythm with roots and harmonies with Mali blues to create their own unique sound. Raka is another one that’s going to get those feet moving, the 9-piece Balkan collective focuses deeply on the traditional folk music of Bulgaria and Macedonia, updating it with their own energetic arrangements! Described by BBC 6’s Tom Robinson as simply ‘completely extraordinary’, we can’t wait to have Perhaps Contraption on stage! Part choir, part chamber orchestra, part avant garde rock group, these guys create a truly unique musical experience. All this and lots more musical treats are lined up for your enjoyment!
