As a Replenish volunteer, you have a real impact on tackling climate change through local action. With your help, we can feed our planet rather than the bins!

In the UK, each year we throw away around 19% of all the food we buy. That means first we pay for, and then throw in the bin, 7 million tons – or around 110kg per person – worth of food. In Oxfordshire, almost a third of the contents of the general waste bins is made up of organic waste. This makes their processing more difficult, more expensive and less efficient.

The good news?

We can cut down on food waste, which helps save all these resources. And we can turn unavoidable food waste, like coffee grounds or banana peels, as well as other organic waste, into something useful – nutrient-rich free compost, which helps keep our soil in good health.

As a Replenish volunteer, you will learn food waste reduction techniques, ways to source and cook with food surplus, and the theory and practice of composting in its many shapes and forms. You will then get to share your skills with other people in your community, creating a ripple effect through which we will see real gains in reducing food waste and cutting down carbon emissions.

 

 

 

 

Anything which helps spread the love for our food and our soils! After you’ve completed your training, you might:

  • Run a stall and give practical demonstrations at public events
  • Start a community fridge in your area
  • Work with a local organisation (school, business, shop, Community Action Group) to help them set up their own composting and food waste reduction programme 
  • Support local food growers (community gardens, allotment holders) in setting up and managing their composting
  • Run a food surplus cookery class or food surplus café in your community
  • Organise a ‘cupboard clearance cooking club’ with your friends
  • Write articles and blog posts for local media
  • Give talks to community groups, schools and organisations
  • Run an awareness campaign in your community
  • Talk to your neighbours and friends and help them set up their own composting system

Your activities will be as local to you as possible – you will become your area’s adviser on champion for organic ‘waste’.

We ask that you carry out at least two one-off events, or support at least one long-term project, per year.

  • You will go through a training programme giving you skills in composting, food waste reduction, surplus cooking, and communication and outreach
  • You will be invited to a wide range of site visits and talks related to organic gardening, food waste, food growing, cooking with surplus, etc
  • You will be part of a community of expert composting and food waste advisors
  • You will be invited to CAG Oxfordshire social gatherings and skill-shares
  • You will have access to publications such as the Permaculture magazine
  • You will gain experience in managing projects and putting on events
  • You will forge new relationships and connections in your local community as well as across Oxfordshire

  • Adequate training, including a resource pack where appropriate
  • The resources you need to run your activity
  • Travel expenses reimbursement, and subsistence reimbursement for longer events
  • Support of the Project Officer who will let you know about opportunities in your local area, organise training workshops and social gatherings, and provide advice on running your own project or event
  • Individual support from the Project Officer when needed
  • Access to an online communications platform where you will be able to talk to other composting and food waste champions from Oxfordshire and our partner projects in Devon

Previous experience of cooking, composting or gardening would be useful, but not essential. We would like you to:

  • Be enthusiastic, sociable and confident with people of all ages and abilities
  • Have good communication skills
  • Be passionate about composting and food waste issues
