Wallingford Green Gym

We are a small community group in South Oxfordshire, since 2003. We do countryside-conservation work. With hand tools. So we get the benefit of the exercise!

What do we do?

“We meet up in a different place in the countryside each week to drink coffee and eat cake,” joked one member to a group of tourists passing by.   They didn’t know whether to believe him or not.

We do have a tea-break each session.  Before and after, we work on tasks which vary according to the season.

In winter we mostly cut back (small) trees growing in the wrong place.  In other places, we plant new trees.

In summer, we look after the trees planted during the winter, keep public footpaths clear, mend fences, re-hang gates, etc.  Sometimes we get the chance to work with livestock: moving sheep, or cutting their toenails.

Whatever the task, we give full training and support – no previous experience needed.

Why do we do it?
  • It’s good for the environment
  • It’s good for us: good for physical health; good for mental health – see Rewards of Green Gym
  • It’s fun
When and where?

Tuesday mornings, 10 am – 1 pm, year round, whatever the weather (usually).  Sites all over South Oxfordshire: see Worksitesfor more.
