Charlbury Green Hub

Corner House, Market Street Charlbury OX7 3PQ United Kingdom [Map]

We aim to promote a better understanding of our local countryside, food, energy, travel, and the wider implications for our planet’s limited resources and climate change. Our website provides information about environmental events happening within reach of Charlbury and the topic pages provide a useful index to relevant news, comments, books, radio and TV programmes. We have two Bring & Takes each year and organise regular tool sharpening, bike repair, and confidential paper shredding events for local residents. We have a regular stall to meet local people at the quarterly Farmers Market in Charlbury where we give food demonstrations such as fermentation, and sourdough bread making, also promoting the Love Food Hate Waste and Master Composting campaigns, and collecting bras and spectacles for reuse. We also help local festivals (Beer Festival, Riverside Festival, Street Fair & Wychwood Forest Fair) to organise their recycling and waste collections. Since 2008, our Charlbury Sharecroppers team have picked plums, apples, pears, medlars and quince locally that would otherwise be wasted and makes them available free to local people at six Big Apple Take-Aways held from September to November – about 2 tonnes of apples are picked and redistributed for eating, cooking and storing each year. Windfalls are collected, the best are juiced to make cider for local festivals and other windfalls are fed to local pigs. Apples are also stored for feeding birds during the winter. We support other local environmental initiatives such as BBOWT’s Blenheim Farm Nature Reserve, Sustainable Charlbury’s Southill Solar Array and Chadlington Kitchen Garden’s local seasonal food. Volunteers welcome to help with the Bring & Takes, festival waste collection, and apple picking.
